Epiretinal Membrane

An Epiretinal Membrane is basically a wrinkle of the top layer of the retina in the back of the eye. ERM’s may cause distorted or decreased vision and usually occur in the elderly. They may occur from Posterior Vitreous Detachments, Retinal Detachments, Surgery, Uveitis, or may just occur randomly.  ERM’s rarely repair on their own and unless there is significant visual loss they are not treated.  Treatment includes surgically peeling the membrane which is very invasive and therefore not commonly done.
